![]() It should be noted that the game has a multiplayer component, with up to 32 possible players in a single game, and all the concerns that online multiplayer brings into any game. You could be devoted to your faith, or a ruthless criminal syndicate. ![]() Your society could be a bastion of peace and democracy, or a bloodthirsty empire bent on galactic genocide. The game doesn't offer a particularly good or bad message. If you are considering buying this game for yourself, you could probably involve younger children in designing your alien society. ![]() If your child is already familiar with other strategy games, particularly Civilization, they will probably be able to enjoy this one as well. That said, the simple beginning - a single star system and a few ships - makes this the easiest of the Paradox strategy games to get into. Younger children may not have enough patience, and are likely to be frustrated. Random elements can doom a playthrough in ways that may not be visible until several hours into a game. There is a tutorial to show new players the basic mechanics, but actually mastering the game requires a lot more time. However, this game is also extremely complex. Drugs are very occasionally mentioned, but not shown. Sexual content and profanity are nonexistent (in single player). Violence and warfare is a major (and unavoidable) feature, but even if you zoom in, all that is shown is starships fighting and exploding into debris. Stellaris has very little in the way of objectionable content, largely due to gameplay taking place on a literally galactic scale. You can explore the galaxy, settle new worlds, build an interstellar society, encounter other life forms, and possibly kill them. Stellaris is an excellent strategy game, where you create and play as a spacefaring civilization. Parents should also be aware that up to 32 players can play a match against each other online, without any moderation. This can be extremely frustrating, and while the game does come with a tutorial and links to its online manual, there's no guarantee that you'll fully understand what you need to do to win without multiple play attempts. The title's random elements and events only serve to further complicate play, making it easy to succeed or fail without your direct influence on the game. While the game has simple controls, this hides an incredibly deep game that's very complex. ![]() In fact, conflicts between ship armadas result in explosions and vessel debris, but that's all that's shown. Although there are some deaths or conflicts explained in text, violence is barely shown. This 4X title (so named because of the need to explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate to succeed in the game) takes to the stars instead of taking the role of a specific character, players essentially oversee a species (either premade or custom-created) as they expand from their individual galaxy to spreading across the universe. Parents need to know that Stellaris is a downloadable strategy title for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PCs that focuses on space colonization and conquest. ![]()
